Before you start

Six things that make a deep clean go faster

Spring cleaning goes wrong in predictable ways. These are the fixes.

  • Declutter before you clean

Clear out what you no longer need first. Donate, sell or bin it. Less stuff is less to clean around.

  • Open the windows

Fresh air dries surfaces faster and clears the fumes from whatever you are spraying.

  • Work top to bottom

Ceilings, then shelves, then floors. Anything you dislodge falls onto something you have not cleaned yet.

  • Finish one room at a time

A finished room is motivating. Half-finished rooms in every direction are not.

  • Pace yourself

This is a two-day job, not a two-hour one. Take breaks, drink water, split it over two weekends if you need to.

  • Go outside too

Patio furniture, the deck, the garage. They are part of the house and they have had a winter of neglect.

A two-day plan

Fit the whole thing into one weekend

Four blocks a day, in an order that stops you cleaning the same surface twice.

Saturday

  1. 1Morning: declutter and organise the closets
  2. 2Late morning: kitchen deep clean
  3. 3Afternoon: bathrooms deep clean
  4. 4Evening: living room and bedrooms

Sunday

  1. 1Morning: windows and light fixtures
  2. 2Late morning: baseboards and walls
  3. 3Afternoon: outdoor spaces
  4. 4Evening: final pass, then stop

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • A thorough spring clean typically takes 1-2 full days for an average home. Many people spread it over a weekend or across multiple weekends.

  • Start at the top of your home and work down. Within each room, clean from ceiling to floor. Save floors for last since debris will fall during cleaning.

  • You'll want your regular cleaning supplies plus: ladder or step stool, microfiber cloths, all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, and trash bags. Consider renting a carpet cleaner.

  • While optional, a seasonal deep clean addresses areas often missed in regular cleaning. It extends the life of your home, improves air quality, and provides a fresh start.

  • Absolutely! Many people do a 'fall cleaning' before the holidays and spending more time indoors. The checklist works for any seasonal deep clean.
